The McGuinness Classic basketball tournament is the longest running basketball tournament in Oklahoma. This past weekend The Classic took place with many recurring teams.
Boys Varsity Head Coach Jake Brown played in the McGuinness Classic from 2006-2009.
“It’s truly like the best tournament in Oklahoma, so we have teams that are begging to get in every single year,” Brown said.
With its extensive history, the tournament has been host to many players who have advanced to collegiate and NBA levels.
This year, Edmond Santa Fe took home the gold, with Crossings in second. Other teams consisted of Edmond Memorial, Choctaw, Deer Creek and Del City. Although McGuinness placed last, freshman Derek Miller said he felt supported and still has a positive outlook for the rest of the season and years to come.
“I feel like we did good,” Miller said. “ We didn’t hit shots, but that will come in the long run. We just have to stay as a team and keep playing.”
Miller believes the team will continue to advance with their shooting through the rest of the season with hard work and determination.
