For senior Jacob Costello transferring from Edmond North to McGuinness his junior year meant not only a change of location, but a new sense of belonging.
Having spent most of his life in Texas, Costello said he was “on his own” for much of his childhood until moving to Oklahoma. Compared to his start at Edmond North in 2023, he found a greater sense of community in joining Irish football.
“They always make me feel like I have a family,” Costello said. “They always make me feel included.”
In choosing where college might take him, a strong communal spirit was something Costello considered essential, which is why he chose to commit to Southwestern Oklahoma State University in November. Costello also liked the school’s aerospace engineering program.
“That inclusion is what I kind of adored at SWOSU,” Costello said.
In particular, Costello said the Bulldog’s Head Coach Andrew Rice and Offensive Coordinator Boone Feldt made him feel welcome.
“They’re both super excited that I’m coming in,” Costello said. “I’m super excited, too.”
In addition, Costello chose SWOSU because of its proximity to home and family.
“Its not too far, but it’s that perfect distance,” Costello said.
From 5 a.m. morning drives to football camp to advice on technique, Costello credits his family as his greatest support. Since putting on the pads for the first time in the seventh grade, he has known he was in it for the long haul.
“Once I stepped on the football field, I knew I was wanting to do it for a while,” Costello said.
As he prepares to graduate and leave the Irish, Costello said he is not afraid, but ready to find a new sense of community at SWOSU.
“Definitely leaving here, it’s rough, but I mean you’ve got to start a new chapter,” Costello said.
