Ending the season with several goals achieved, the girls team placed third overall in state and the boys placed 6th overall in state. Junior Torie Whitbeck placed first in the Girls 500 Freestyle and Junior Macy Lewis placed first in both the Girls 200 Individual Medley and the Girls 100 Butterfly.
“My favorite thing is the support we give each other after our races,” Gavula said. “Even though it’s mostly an individual sport, the relays and team aspect are my favorite.”
With the season coming to a close, the team begins their preparation for the state competition.
“Our practices last one hour and take place four days a week,” Gavula said.
Practices take place at the Oklahoma Athletic Center, formerly known as the Lighthouse, before school.
“At practice, we work on technique and perfecting our starts and turns,” junior Allie Lewis said.
Practices are for focusing on technique, while also perfecting rhythm and timing.
“Normally we swim drills, work on speed or technique, or practice our dives,” Gavula said.
Practices become more intense as the season goes on and as state approaches.
“I’m looking forward to racing all the 5A teams at state,” Lewis said. “We have a couple relays that have potential to get top 3 at state, which would be really exciting.”
