This year’s Olympics theme is: DECADES! Each grade has been assigned a decade, which will be used for olympics shirts and activities throughout the week.
Seniors are the ’70s, juniors are the ’80s, sophomores are the ’90s and freshmen are the ’00s. This year for the first time the teachers have also been given a theme which is the ’60s.
At the blacklight assembly, the theme was prevalent with each performance focusing on a specific decade. The pom team highlighted the 2000s in their performances while the DanceVisions team embodied the ’90s.
All the classes compete with each other for Olympic points throughout the year, and Olympics week has multiple activities that have been set up by the student council that will count toward each class’s Olympic points.
“It’s a good way to have competition, but still have fun with it,” StuCo Sponsor Susan Smith said. “I think there is a tug of war that everyone looks forward to who will win again or will be returning champions.”
Each event has been planned to promote student involvement.
“Each class has their own big tailgate with different food and decorations and music, and that really gets people excited to be there,” Chair of Olympics Joseph Coats said. “The T-shirt design, it matters more than you think because honestly, a good T-shirt will make people more likely to buy it and more likely to participate.”
During Olympics week there is room for everyone to contribute to the events in one way or another.
“It’s the most involved I’ve ever seen a class as whole because it takes your athletes to win the events and your council to plan the events,” Coats said. “It’s the best way that people really get together.”
Around 100 people are included in the preparations.
“We work with pretty much every teacher because they each get their own event,” Coats said. “We work with Clancy Club to plan stuff.”
Smith has been working with StuCo for months to make Olympics a fun environment for students to work together.
“The best part of Olympics week is to see all the different classes work together,” Smith said. “We work as one team to achieve a common goal and there’s camaraderie that takes place between the classes.”
StuCo President Amy Le explained that it is important and exciting to get involved in Olympics week.
“In the moment it is so rewarding to see friendly competition from all grades unite to cheer for people you may not know, but still have the common goal of winning and having fun,” Le said.
There are many activities and ways to get involved throughout the week, especially on field day.
“From face painting, to dance Battles, to twister, to basketball, there is something for everyone,” Le said.
With summer approaching, students’ school spirit lessens compared to the first semester, so Olympics week provides a much needed boost.
“Right when Olympics week hits the school spirit is insane,” Assistant Chair of Olympics Luke Strickland said. “I think the favorite activity won’t be on field day this year, but me and Joe chose to move the weight lifting event to during the week during an assembly, and it’s going to be awesome.”
