Senioritis is a term that has been used to describe the unmotivated feeling that emerges within students during their last year of high school.
Those struggling with the lack of motivation characterized as senioritis will often skip class, and put little to no effort into school work, which almost always leads to lower grades. Senioritis is a widespread issue for seniors across the globe as it can be difficult for them to want to go to class and do work when they’re ready to graduate and move on.
Senior Vanessa Bui explained that in this last semester she is feeling more tired and less motivated than usual.
“Maybe it’s because I’m going into graduation, like having been admitted to schools that I’m not trying as hard,” Bui said.
This is a feeling that many seniors share as the year comes to a close and next steps approach.
Senior Ryan Hughes said that as the weather gets warmer she feels less motivated especially as classes get easier.
“My grades are higher than they’ve ever been, just because my classes are not really that hard this year,” Hughes said. “So, I can really slack off and they don’t drop at all, so that’s been like a really bad thing for me.”
It can be difficult for seniors to continue participating in their classes. Many seniors come up with creative ways to stay at least partially motivated.
Ryan Hughes stays motivated by not allowing herself to see her friends if her homework is not done and reminding herself of what she has worked so hard for.
For many seniors the idea of struggling with senioritis can be difficult.
“I don’t want to slip into someone who just doesn’t care about anything,” senior Rusty Cleaver said.
Despite this the impact of senioritis is seen all over the school as seniors struggle to find motivation.
Assistant Principal Tim McFadden sees senioritis the most in the little things.
“You first see it in attendance, and the grades, and trying to quote ‘get away with it,’ whatever it is like taking two lunches or leaving early or coming back late,” McFadden said.
As the year draws to a close senioritis becomes more prevalent as most seniors are eager for their next steps.
