Having had season tickets to the Civic Center Music Hall for five years, I have to say the production of “Moulin Rouge!” is one of the best performances I have seen there. Directed by Alex Timbers, the production was visually stunning, had great vocals, meaningful costumes and fantastic acting.
“Moulin Rouge!” is a captivating love story of an English playwright who falls in love with Satine, the star of the Moulin Rouge gentlemen’s club. He fights to keep her away from the duke who is funding his show. During that time, she falls deathly ill.
The costumes and choreography in the production were fantastic. Elaborate dresses and suits with vibrant colors to set the mood. The costumes highlighted the class divide with the elaborate gowns and colorful wardrobe of the upper class opposed to Satine, with her simple dark red dress.
I think the most captivating aspect was the choreography. The characters’ emotions were expressed so well through their movements in a way that really spoke to the viewer.
The only criticism that I have is the song choice. The best way I could describe it is 2017 millennial music. I would have liked to see more of the original soundtrack from the 2001 movie. I loved the crowd interaction, the actors would throw confetti and streamers to the crowd which kept the audience engaged.
The production was really great and if you didn’t have a chance to see it I recommend seeing the 2001 movie. The musical was based on the movie and I think they did a great job capturing the big ideas of the movie.
