“Barbie” directed by Greta Gerwig won People’s Choice Award for favorite film. The film came to the theaters in the summer of 2023, and is still being nominated and winning multiple awards.
“Barbie” isn’t like anything you’ve seen before. The movie isn’t about a plastic doll, either. Director Greta Gerwig uses uniqueness and creativity to portray flawed American society and the struggles of womanhood. It allows the audience to have something to relate to as well as embracing individuality.
The plot follows Barbie’s journey to the “real world” where she forms bonds with many different people. She realizes the values of friendship and teamwork, as well as learning to embrace individuality and differences. In Barbie World, every doll lives a perfect life where everything is colorful and nothing bad has ever happened. When Barbie makes her journey to the real world, she discovers it’s nothing like her home. In the real world, Barbie discovers life and humans are messy. She feels uncomfortable emotions like anxiety and insecurities.
Barbie stands out to a lot of people, mostly women, because it has given girls a feeling of nostalgia like no other movie ever has. Every woman has lived in Barbie World at some point in their lives. As little girls, most of us didn’t feel fear about how we perceived or how we looked. We believed we could accomplish anything, just like our Barbie’s. But as we grew up, we entered the real world where emotions got too strong, and we felt out of control.
“Barbie” is a complicated movie that touches on many topics that aren’t often talked about in the media. The transition from childhood to adulthood, and the imperfect world where women are put down often. We have to go through this everyday, feeling emotions we do not want to feel. But at the end of the movie, Barbie ends up okay. She is still messy, but she is human – just like us. The end of the movie shows that we will all end up okay, too.
This movie is one of my top movies of 2023 because I felt incredibly moved by it. By the end of the movie, I looked around the theater and every woman in there was crying. We cried for the little girls we used to be, and the ones we are now. “Barbie” stood out to many people because we watched a familiar female experience on the screen like no other movie has captured. We watched as the negative image of a stereotypical doll turned into a positive image of an intelligent woman who is capable of anything.
As well as many heartfelt messages, “Barbie” had a great dialogue with funny jokes and an amazing cast. The movie was fun and exciting with a colorful set and perfect music that captured the scene. Watching the movie made me laugh, have fun, and cry. It may not be for everyone, but I believe everyone should watch it at least once.
