The boys and girls bowling teams competed in regionals February 17 with junior Kyla Reid and senior Roman Chambers winning all region bowlers.
The girls team took fifth place.
“It was really fun and was something I’ve never experienced,” Reid said.
Junior Rebecca Horn said that regionals were way more intense than she thought.
“Regionals was really fun because we did way better than expected as a team, especially considering that our fourth bowler Blair Billen-Mills was bowling with her left hand because she broke her right hand,” Horn said.
The boys team took sixth place.
“I think everyone enjoyed playing against other schools,” Chambers said. “We made it to the qualifying round with a close game and ended up losing. I think that the best part of it was the experience and how everyone got to play and compete in a regional tournament.”
Coach Alex Genheimer said that the school has had more competitive teams in the past.
“This year, I think every bowler is brand new to bowling, so we’re having a lot of fun, but we haven’t been super competitive,” Genheimer said.
Chambers says that he’s enjoyed being on the team
“It’s a good group of people,” Chambers said. “The coaches are nice; the community’s good, and I encourage a lot of people to join. It’s pretty small but, I think that it’s something hidden, but there’s a pretty big community in Oklahoma.”
“The preseason practice basically starts in either late October or early November, then regionals and state,” Bowling Coach Matthew Grover said.
Grover started bowling with friends and thought it would be fun to coach the team with Genherimer.
“I started bowling about a little less than three years ago, just with a couple of buddies outside of school,” Grover said.
Grover said that he thinks regionals were a good overall experience for the team.
“It may not have gone our way with every single bowl, but the team performed well, played with good sportsmanship, kept it competitive and had a good time doing it,” Grover said. “I’m proud of how the team showed up and am hoping that we can continue growing next season.”
