Around one in five Americans do not know how to swim; it is also said to be one of the most difficult sports. Therefore, there is no surprise when the swim team has lots to say about how much work it is.
The swim team consists of 21 athletes, ranging from freshman to seniors. During the current season, the swim team has worked hard in both practice and meets. According to swim head coach Mark Veneklasen, the team was ahead of the game to start off, and they continue to push to be better.
“[They are] friends on deck,” Veneklasen said. “When they’re in the pool, it’s a battle.”
Senior swimmer Macy Lewis said that she likes to go into races with a positive mindset. Lewis started swimming competitively at the age of 10 and now has a scholarship to Texas A&M.
For some of these athletes, swimming has always been a big part of their life.
“Honestly, swimming is kind of an escape from reality,” freshman swimmer Kaylie Fedor said. “You’re competing against yourself, but you’re also competing against others.”
Along with swimming being competitive, some athletes focus on the teamwork aspect.
“Being open with people, you learn new techniques,” sophomore swimmer John Nguyen said. “That’s what actually keeps the sport alive.”
The team’s next meet is the East and West Regionals Feb. 3.
