Pens, Posca markers and paper: these are all it takes for sophomore Angela Williams to make a masterpiece. She’s been making art since preschool, and her passion has grown into a business as she takes commissions on her Instagram, angelas_art__.
When Willimas was young, she was always drawing. She doesn’t remember how she got into it, but once she started she never really stopped.
“With art you can just take whatever’s in your head and just put it down,” Williams said. “It’s cool. It’s like your own.”
It’s clear from seeing Williams’ art that she has a distinct style. It’s crowded, overlapping, and sort of abstract. It predominantly features women.
“It’s sort of sketch-y,” Williams said. “I kinda got into it by picking up different things from other artists I really like. It’s changed a lot over the years, just by what I’m into at the time.”
Williams always wanted to have a business for her art, and she started by asking kids at her school. Some of the more unique commissions that she does are decorating instruments. She put her art on sophomore Cameron Mayberry’s drum.
“The last commission I did was for my friend Drake,” Willimas said. “He was like, I really want a lot of purple and space, but you do whatever you want. So most of the time for commissions I just do whatever I want. They choose what I put down, but I take control.”
The price for Williams’ commissions typically depends on the scale of the art. She charges $40 to $60 for guitars, and $10 to $15 for art prints. The best way to ask for a commission is to either DM her on Instagram or come up to her in person. She’s also working on expanding her business with pre-made art.
“I want to put my own designs on prints or bags or stuff like that,” Williams said. “Like my own merch.”
