Two new clubs have been created, and students can contact the founders or sponsors listed below if they are interested in joining them.
Fishing Club
- President and Founder: Luke Strickland
- Strickland’s best catch? “One of the ponds that we’re probably going to fish at is lake Aluma,” Strickland said. “I caught a 5.2 pound bass there, which is my biggest catch so far, but I’m hoping for it to be bigger than that.”
- What does the club do? Once a term the club will go on a fishing trip. They will go to private lakes, so no one has to pay for a fishing license.
- Reason for starting: “I’ve been fishing since I was one year old,” Strickland said. “So when I heard the club didn’t exist, I thought it would be really cool to start it up.”
- Sponsor: Coach Matthew Cowart
SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions)
- President and Founder: Owen Cunningham
- What is SADD: Owen Cunningham, founder and president of the new chapter, describes it as “A nationwide advocacy organization that aims to promote positive behavior in students and teens, particularly through improving mental health, and reducing the amount of substance abuse, drunk driving, suicidal thoughts, that sort of thing, in teenagers and youth. They operate mostly through student-run, local chapters.”
- What does the club do: Once a month meetings, with plans in the works for community outreach projects.
- Reason for starting: “I think that SADD does good work, and around Oklahoma City I’ve seen and known people who have been involved in or know someone who was involved in a D.U.I. incident,” Cunningham said. “Whether it’s nicotine, alcohol, or other drugs, it’s definitely very much a problem among youth nowadays.”
- Sponsors: Teachers Kelly Allen and Lauren Peña
